Bahía de Caraquez Eco - city

Bahía de Caráquez

Bahia de Caraquez is a small and beautiful city located on Ecuador's central coast in the province of Manabi. Its name comes from it's geographical shape, it is located at the mouth of the Chone River. The geographical aspects of this bioregion gives it many wonderful natural scenarios where ecosystems such as the dry tropical forest, mangroves, wetlands produce amazing marine and bird life.

The fantastic amount of natural beauty that surrounds Bahia together with the architectonic beauty of a modern city gives it a 'magic touch'. In 1998 all of the Ecuadorian coastline was devastated by floods and landslides provoked by the El Niño phenomenon. The city most affected by this was our Bahia de Caraquez. Many people were left homeless and there was an enormous economic loss in this productive and commercial city.

A short time after the 'El Niño" phenomenon there was a second natural disaster! An earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale hit Bahia destroying many buildings, residences further aggravating the grave situation of the commercial, and tourism sectors of the area.

From these two natural phenomenons onward, several efforts to rebuild the city have been made thanks to the NGO´s from friendly countries. In 1998 the Municipality of Sucre (to which Bahia de Caraquez belongs) declared Bahía an Ecocity with the goal to establish sustainable ecological actions and projects. The paper recycling communitarian groups of Canton Sucre, the reforestation of the hills, the separation of home-produced city garbage divided into organic and inorganic groups, and the reforestation of mangroves are some of the examples of the action taken. The 'ecocity' declaration is compromised of the Municipality of Sucre as well as the people of the community to consolidate the process to keep Bahia an ecocity.

Bahia de Caraquez is also considered as "The Cradle of the Ecuadorian Nationality", because according to the "History of the Quito Kingdom" written by Juan de Velasco, here where this city is located, was the geographical point where the aborigine nation called  "Los Caras"  first arrived  using enormous balsa wood boats. This is from the most ancient of the historic text about aborigine history.  This history is kept as a legend now by many people who do not understand how   it disappeared leaving no traces.
