Cerro Seco

Cerro Seco Reserve is the protector forest of the ecocity (Bahía de Caráquez). It is located at the foot of the city, it has a native cabin for tourist reception. It offers the possibility to hike in the tropical dry forest, which it is formed  by large varieties of endemic flora and fauna of the Tumbesian dry tropical forest (extended between Ecuador and Peru).

Cerro Seco

A hike early in the morning, will allow you to watch and to hear dozens of birds as the Ecuadorian picolet (Picumus sclateri), the pacific hornero (Furnarius cinnamomeus), the long tailed mockingbird (Mimus longicaudatus), the sooty-crowned flycatcher (Myiarchus phaeocephalus), Baird´s flycatcher (Myiondinastes chrysocephalus) among the most common birds.
With the help of a native guide you hike the path of the reserve to   the highest point of the forest called “Condor Mirador” where it is 120  meters above sea level.  Here you  will be able to take the best photos of the ecocity and its surroundings.

Cerro Seco

The most interesting part of the tour is to see and learn about the marvelous tree well known as Ceibo or kapok, a dry tropical tree which shape resembles the shape of a women. You will also learn about the natural glue of the dry forest called muyuyo, the natural repellent known as Palo Santo and  a variety of  ethno botanical and medicinal uses of plants of the dry forest.
The hiking experience takes approximately 3 hours. At the end of the tour, we will do a safari in our jeep to take a look of the surrounding dry forest of Bahia, where we will watch a specie of bird known locally as lincheros or colembas and globally as caciques (Cacicus cela). This specie is a bird that nest in colony in the trees of ceibos.
