REFUGIO DE VIDA SILVESTRE ISLA CORAZON

Isla Corazon is located in the estuary of the Chone River, just 30 minutes from Bahia de Caraquez using a motor boat and 15 minutes by car. It is a mangrove formation that resembles the shape of a heart, translated that means "corazon" in Spanish. There is an ecotouristic path in the interior of the island which facilitates the observation of the fauna and flora life of the mangrove.

La Isla Corazón is the habitat of one of the biggest frigate bird colony in the Pacific Coast of South America. The island is also the habitat of bird species such as pelicans, white ibis, cormorants, egrets, herons, night herons, kingfishers and migratory birds.

The island is managed by the community of fishermen of Portovelo (Asomanglar) since 1998. The island has an interpretative center where there is located a group of small aquariums that shows the life of the mangroves such as shrimps, fishes, mollusk, and crustaceous, there is also a room to watch and an introductory video and to see a photo exposition of birds of the estuary.
With  the assistance of a native guide and a tour leader, you will visit the frigate bird colony and then you will be taken by dugout canoes trough a mangrove tunnel which is one of the most commented on experience of the tour according our eco travelers. You will see the artisan techniques of fishing and mollusk and crustaceous recollecting, you will hear some old traditional storys told by your fisherman-native guide, one of them being 'The legend of the goblin of Isla Corazon'.
