Don Juan .... Ballenas Jorobadas
Year after year, giant marine mammals arrive to Ecuadorian coast, these are the cetaceans well knows as Humpback whales. One hour from Bahia de Caraquez is located the fishing community of Don Juan where whale watching eco tours are made by motor boat since 2003.
The humpback whales arrive from the cold waters of the Antarctic Ocean in the month of May. They begin a long migration of thousands of kilometers searching for warm water to mate, to give birth and for the rearing of their young during their first months of life.
The migration season take place in Ecuador between the months of June and September when it is possible to watch these humpback whales. The ocean waters of the province of Manabi, are considered the best to whale watching, and the coast of Don Juan is an ideal place to watch those giant cetaceans. The community of fishermen of Don Juan began to offer eco tour for whale watching in front of its beach and with their boats since 2003, and are getting excellent results in tourist operation and sightings.
Don Juan is an valid alternative to see the whales, because there are not too many boats around when the whales appear unlike other whale watching points.
The humpback whales can be watched in their rituals of mating, jumping and submerging in the warm water. Sometimes it is possible to watch groups of whales, you will go with a specialist of marine mammals, and with a boat equipped with radios and life jackets.
