LA SEGUA WETLANDS AND ITS BIRDS

Explore with us the route of La Segua wetlands, and discover the natural scenery or a swamp rounded by aquatic vegetation, where hundreds of birds can be watched mating, feeding or resting in the bush and the typical aquatic plants of the wetlands.
The wetlands of La Segua belongs to the low basin of the Chone River, it always has worked as a natural stabilizer to prevent floods in the surrounding of Chone during the rainy season.
The wetlands cover an area of 1742 hectares in the rainy season. These wetlands belong to the communities of La Segua, San Anonio, and La Sabana and some of the inhabitants have formed a native guide association and manage the wetland as a ecotouristic attraction. The wetlands have an interpretation center for tourism information and also a resting area for tourists.

The wetlands at times are flooded lands, where floating vegetation has adapted to live in these circumstances. You will watch hundreds of aquatic birds living and feeding and resting there, some of the birds, are migratory birds from the northern hemisphere, they fly thousand of kilometers during the winter northern hemisphere to feed on these resources and searching for places to rest in South America.
They have registered 164 species of birds distributed in 44 birds families, at least 63 species are aquatic birds, the rest are non-aquatic birds associated to this ecosystem. The site is visited year by year by migratory birds; some of the birds use the wetlands for courtship and nesting. Some of the birds are residents the all the year round as for example the egrets and herons.
One curious specie of bird it is the wattled jacana, a marvelous specie adapted with long toes to walk on floating vegetation, is the only bird specie where the male assume all the care and feeding of their young, a function normally performed by females. Other interesting birds to watch are the cocoi heron, the wood storks, the black billied whistling duck, the snail hawk among the most common especies.
