Mache Chindul Ecological Reserve

Reserva Mache Chindul

Mache - Chindul is one of the three areas protected by the National Park System.  It is located in Manabi where some of the last remnants of the very humid tropical forests are located. It is about 25.000 hectares in size and characterized by one of the highest levels of biodiversity and surprising levels of endemism.  In their extensive areas tropical humid zones of Forest are  (BhT); humid Forest Premontano (Bh-PM) and very humid Forest Premontano(BmH-PM).

The two main areas of the reservation includes: Cabeceras de Bilsa, in the high basin of the Bilsa river, a few kilometers to the east of San Jose of Bilsa, south of  the city of Muisne, and very close to the coast line.

A second area is Biological Station Bilsa, an area protected by the Foundation Jatun Sacha that covers around 3.000 hectares.  Although it is physically isolated from the Andes, this reservation possesses species that also are found in the cloud forests of the high Andes about  100 km to the southeast.

Living Culture

The Reservation is populated by communities of Chachi, two are black communities and  more than thirty dispersed communities of mestizo colonies. The inhabitants of these colonies as in other zones of the province of Esmeraldas are poor peasants displaced from their places of origin, they lack property titles for the majority of the land, appropriate technical training and technical aid for sustainable production and commercialization, this situation has had severe affects to the forest ecosystems of Mache-Chindul and of its exceptional biodiversity.
